A hospital stay can be stressful for a child, parents and siblings. That’s why we take extra steps to create a soothing, comfortable and pleasant environment for our youngest patients and their families.

Our approach extends beyond medical care. We understand the importance of creating a supportive atmosphere that caters to the emotional and psychological well-being of both your child and your entire family. Our facilities are designed with child-friendly décor, provide developmentally appropriate toys to encourage the continued health of our patients and quiet spaces for rest and reflection.

Communication is key during a hospital stay. We partner with you to ensure your child's care is optimized, and our team will provide the appropriate level of care to your child regardless of the severity of illness. We’re always available to answer questions, provide updates and offer guidance about what to expect during the hospital stay and beyond. We also offer resources and support for siblings, recognizing that they are also affected by the hospital experience.

Our specially trained pediatric team of over 400 staff are dedicated to working with children. Child Life specialists are also available to provide emotional support and additional education to both children and parents during your hospital stay.

Pediatric Specialty Units

As part of pediatric critical care, your child may benefit from services in one of our pediatric specialty units.

This 19-bed unit is located on a dedicated floor in a separate wing of the Swedish First Hill campus. It offers large, friendly private rooms with a place for parents to sleep. It also has separate rooms for procedures and a special waiting room for families. Meet our pediatric hospitalists.

Our PICU is where specially trained intensive care physicians, also called pediatric intensivists, and intensive-care-trained nurses provide care to our young medical and surgical patients 24/7. Our pediatric intensivists also support sedation services for inpatient and outpatient procedures and critical care transport for our pediatric patients who need to be transferred between hospitals.

If your child needs emergency services, we have an emergency room (ER) designed and equipped to treat kids of all ages – from newborns to young adults. The ER physicians are all trained and board-certified to care for pediatric emergencies. Our pediatric inpatient care teams and specialists are also available for evaluation or consultation 24/7.

We are the only birthing hospital in Puget Sound with a Level IV NICU under the same roof, which means we are fully staffed and equipped to care for the tiniest, most fragile babies. New parents and their baby get to be in the same building during your stay to help the family unit bond quickly and easily.

Conditions We Treat

Your child may need our help if they have a condition that leads to an unstable or critical condition, including:

  • Post-surgery recovery that requires closer monitoring
  • Seizures, Level 3 Epilepsy Center of Excellence
  • Severe respiratory illness, including asthma, pneumonia and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
  • Viral and bacterial meningitis
  • Sedation services

It’s easy to admit your pediatric patients to Swedish:

  1. Call 206-215-3409 to connect with the Inpatient Pediatric Unit or the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

No, each child has their own room. We’ve designed our pediatric units to be as comfortable as possible – not only for your child, but for you and the rest of your family.

To make sure each child feels safe and secure in their hospital room, we perform procedures in a special treatment room. After the procedure, your child returns to the comfort and safety of their own room.

Yes, in each room on our pediatric units, you’ll find a cot, pull-out chair or window bed with extra linens so that you can sleep near your child.

Yes, you can bring comfort items from home. If it helps ease your child, we encourage you to bring familiar items from home.

We offer a variety of other services and materials to make your stay as comfortable as possible, including:
