Josef Rosinski - Mesothelioma
Swedish Thoracic Surgery / First Hill
Josef Rosinski was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma in 2005, at the age of 68. He underwent induction chemotherapy in Mount Vernon before his surgery at Swedish Medical Center.
On September 19, 2005 he had a right sided extra-pleural pneumonectomy (removal of his right lung and the lining around the lung as well as a portion of the diaphragm) by Dr. Eric Vallieres. Six weeks after his surgery, he completed a course of radiation therapy under the care of Dr. Vivek Mehta.
Treatment for mesothelioma, consists of tri-modality therapy which combines chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. The road to recovery is often a long and winding road. Joe credits Dr. Vallieres and his staff for the excellent care that he received.
While he doesn't remember very much about his surgery, the hospital stay or the first couple of weeks at home, his wife Ursula remembers everything as if it were yesterday. She also credits the ICU nurses for their support and care. There were a few times when she needed a hug and a shoulder to cry on and the nurses were there.
Joe is now almost three years out from his surgery and there is no evidence of his disease. With only one lung, Joe has returned to his golf game and he has even taken to the ice to go skating!
