Osteoporosis is a progressive disease in which bone mass deteriorates - usually in the hip, spine or wrist - making these bones dangerously weak, brittle and susceptible to fracture. Of the 10 million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis, eight million are women and two million are men.

Almost 34 million Americans are considered to be at risk for the disease, and 80 percent of those affected by osteoporosis are women.
