Multiple Sclerosis Center
The Pacific Northwest is believed to have one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, so it’s natural that the Swedish Neuroscience Institute is home to a world-class MS Center – a leader in MS treatment and research.
We help people with MS live to their fullest by providing an array of crucial services in one location. Our experts are recognized for compassionate care that includes the latest medical treatments but also addresses the emotional and physical needs of patients.
If you are new to the MS Center, you will need a referral from your neurologist or primary care physician to make an appointment. Follow these steps:
To schedule an appointment with a doctor you have already seen, you may use MyChart.
Our staff can often schedule multiple appointments on the same day. For example, MRI is in the same building as our clinic. Imaging done two hours prior to clinic appointments is available for our review. Appointments with our rehabilitation physician, physical therapists, social workers and others are commonly done on the same day as other appointments.
Here are some of the things that make our 11,700-square-foot center a national model for clinical care, research and well-being programs for MS:
- An award-winning design to help people with MS use the space easily
- Furniture and specialized medical, therapeutic and recreational equipment designed to meet the unique needs of MS patients
- A 1,500-square-foot, landscaped outdoor space that includes several gathering areas, as well as a harness system and a range of terrains for patients to practice walking
- Wellness services that include physical and rehabilitative therapy programs in a specially equipped gym, exercise classes and social programs such as a book club and music class
- A welcoming community commons for patients and their families to gather and meet others
- On-site research and clinical trials of promising medications -- a welcome convenience for patients who can easily meet fact-to-face with research coordinators
The symptoms of multiple sclerosis are some of the most varied of any disease. They depend on the location of damaging lesions, which can occur in the brain, spinal cord or optic nerves. Symptoms are unique to each person and they can change the course of the disease in unpredictable ways.
Our specialists use medication to treat MS, but we also have many other services that are equally important to nurturing your well-being. They include physical therapy, support groups for you and your loved ones, and an active, caring community to help you thrive. Our wellness teams will create a treatment plan for your unique needs.
