Volunteering at the Swedish Mill Creek Campus

Our volunteers are the heart of Swedish Mill Creek. Whether you are looking to volunteer to explore an interest in the medical field, brush up on your work skills, need hours for applying to your desired healthcare school program, or are looking to make a career change, volunteering at Swedish Mill Creek is a great choice.

Mill Creek is a stand-alone Emergency Department. Our primary volunteer placement opportunity is for applicants who are 18+ and graduated from high school to experience emergency care and have an introduction into the health care environment.

It's a well-known fact that animals can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and promote healing. The Swedish Therapy Pups program began in early 2008 and has been supporting the needs of our patients, visitors, and staff ever since.

Becoming a Therapy Pup Team

All therapy teams at Swedish must be registered as a Therapy Team by one of the following accepted agencies.

Once you have your certification you will need to meet with the volunteer manager to discuss the possibilities for working in a hospital setting. Not every therapy team is suited to working in a healthcare environment. We will review the following:

Working with your animal
  • Identifying Stress
  • Learning commands for use in the therapy setting
  • Practicing around healthcare equipment
As a therapy animal handler
  • Working with patients
  • Approaching patients who may not be feeling well or who are not receptive to a dog visit
  • Outlining the specific responsibilities of a handler
  • Addressing common staff concerns regarding visiting animal programs
  • Learning about infection control
