In the videos below, Swedish Orthopedic Institute physicians discuss joint replacement treatment at Swedish.

How do I refer my patients for a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon at Swedish?

We make referrals easy: Simply call our joint replacement coordinator at 206-215-9145 or you can find a specialist who performs surgery at one of our campus locations:

When should I refer a patient for a surgical consultation?

The decision to proceed with hip or knee replacement surgery is based primarily on treating pain and improving the quality of life for the individual patient. When pain cannot be controlled without narcotics, it is time to refer your patient for a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon.

Also, a surgical consultation is wise if your patient’s condition:

  • Interferes with sleep
  • Interferes with work
  • Keeps patients from comfort performing activities of daily leaving, such as putting on shoes, going up and down stairs, doing household chores or walking more than a mile
  • Detailed information is available online to help patients determine if they are ready to take the next step. We also offer your patients free seminars on Joint Replacement: The Right Choice for You? at various times and locations.

Why should I refer patients to Swedish?

Your patients will be in highly trained and experienced hands. The Swedish Orthopedic Institute performs more joint replacements than any other medical center in the region: more than 1,000 hip replacements and more than 1,000 knee replacements each year.

Orthopedic innovations will be available to your patients. Our board-certified orthopedic surgeons pioneered techniques that are used worldwide and were the first in the area to perform MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Replacement. They have also begun using the MAKOplasty technology for total hip replacements.

Patients love our Joint Journey plan.  This step-by-step plan details a patient's daily routine and care, from preadmission to outpatient rehabilitation.

We’re a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacement. This designation by the Blue Cross/Blue Association recognizes that Swedish has better overall outcomes with fewer medical complications.
