Inpatient Care

Inpatient care is beneficial for people who are experiencing an acute mental illness and require intensive 24-hour care to stabilize their condition. Our specialized staff includes board-certified physicians, nurses, social workers and other professionals who are experienced in treating various behavioral health problems with compassion and respect. We partner with patients to develop treatment plans, which promote stability, maximize daily functioning, enhance personal and environmental safety, and mobilize community support. When patients leave the hospital, we collaborate with them to ensure they can access appropriate resources to continue their journey toward wellness.

Swedish has an inpatient psychiatric unit located at Swedish Ballard that features 22 beds and quiet rooms to help promote mindfulness and self-centering. Swedish Edmonds has 17 private rooms and three semi-private rooms located on the top floor of the Edmonds tower, which features panoramic mountain views. The Edmonds program welcomes patients ages 18 to 64 and accommodates those who meet voluntary and involuntary admission criteria. The Partial Hospitalization Program is also available at Edmonds.

Both programs offer a variety of inpatient groups including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), art therapy, nutrition, pharmacology, spirituality, pet therapy, among others.

Psychiatric Consultations

Patients being treated for physical problems may also show signs of depression or other mental-health concerns, either due to the condition or as a reaction to medication.

Physicians caring for patients admitted to Swedish can request a same-day consultation with one of our board-certified psychiatrists about medication interactions and side effects or other treatment considerations that will impact the health of their patients.

Electroconvulsive Therapy

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an intensive treatment for patients with severe depression. Our experienced psychiatric and medical staff evaluate whether ECT is an appropriate option for patients. ECT is available for qualified patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis at Swedish Ballard.
