What is anxiety?

Anxiety is one of the most common symptoms in primary care patients. Anxiety can take many forms in different people. Some examples of anxiety symptoms include:

  • Uncontrollable worry or concern for events that may  never happen
  • Body symptoms or concern about having a disease
  • Fear in a specific situation such as social interactions or flying
  • Thinking about traumatic events that may have occurred in someone’s life that left a lasting impact

Every day worries and stresses are a part of life and unavoidable. However, if a person finds that their worries are significant to the point of interfering in their life and causing them to avoid certain things they need to do (like driving or shopping at a store), then that may be a sign that there is an anxiety disorder.
