How does anxiety affect the brain?

When a person is struggling with anxiety, they may notice an impact in many areas of their life. 

  • Sleep is often disrupted –a person can have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. 
  • A person may notice difficulty performing at work due to problems with concentration and focus.  
  • A person may find they cannot get anything done at work because they are too worried about making a mistake and need to keep checking their work.  

Appetite is often impacted as well and can lead to weight loss or weight gain. Sometimes people find they lose their appetite when they are anxious; or they feel nauseous or have diarrhea when they eat, which can lead to avoiding eating and weight loss. Sometimes individuals will try to comfort themselves with food when they are anxious, which can lead to weight gain.
