Are antidepressants the only form of treatment for depression?

While the default form of treatment for depression is typically antidepressants, they are not the only option for people with the disorder.

Every person is different, and it’s important to educate yourself on the treatment options for your unique symptoms of depression. If you have severe depression, multiple forms of treatment may be required. For milder forms of depression some alternatives to antidepressants include:

  • Counseling
  • Exercise (e.g. yoga)
  • Meditation
  • Dietary modifications

If you have been diagnosed with depression or feel you may have the disorder, talk to your primary care doctor or therapist to determine the best course of action for you.

Ideally, depression is treated with a combination of medication and therapy.

  • Many patients benefit greatly from working with both a psychiatrist and a therapist to maximize their response
  • Including a cognitive behavioral or psychodynamic approach with medications may also help symptoms improve greatly
