U.S. News & World Report names Providence Swedish among nation’s best hospitals for maternity care

In this article:

  • Providence Swedish's maternity care has been recognized among U.S. News & World Report's annual survey of hospitals and health-care services.
  • Providence Swedish delivers more babies than any health system in Western Washington.
  • Providence Swedish is continually working to enhance maternity care with services and initiatives to help ensure that every parent has the best possible birthing experience.

Providence Swedish has once again been recognized for excellence in maternity care, with U.S. News & World Report naming Swedish First Hill in Seattle and Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia to the publication’s Best Hospitals for Maternity 2024 rankings. Long known in the Puget Sound region and beyond for excellence in maternity care, Providence Swedish delivers more babies each year than any hospital system in Western Washington.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on a wide variety of maternity care measures, including safety and quality, fewer complications for newborns, and feeding rates. Services and amenities are also taken into account, including availability of private rooms, as well as birthing classes and hydrotherapy tubs, which some parents choose to use during labor.

"We are honored by this recognition from U.S. News & World Report, and extremely proud of our Providence Swedish First Hill maternity caregivers," says Tanya Sorensen, M.D., executive medical director of the Swedish Women’s and Children's Institute. “Caring for parents and their babies is central to our mission at Swedish: to improve the health and well-being of each person we serve.”

Swedish continues to enhance its maternity care and services with numerous initiatives, including our latest, TeamBirth. This program improves care by ensuring people giving birth and the clinicians caring for them have shared input and understanding during the delivery of care with check-in huddles and open two-way communication. TeamBirth launched in October in partnership with the Washington State Hospital Association.
