Professional Statement

Why Family Medicine? I chose Family Medicine as a specialty because I believe through the uniqueness of Family Medicine, I can focus on relational, holistic medicine for you and your family. I have been in practice for almost 20 years and continue to believe this to be true. My goal, through this Doctor-Patient Relationship, is to help you achieve optimal health through promoting a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention. I believe that the best health outcomes are achieved when you and I work together as a team, with mutual respect and shared decision-making. Your health is ultimately dependent on your care of your body and I am here to give you expert opinion on how to achieve that. Therefore, I consider open and honest communication as a basis of successful relationship. What is a D.O.? As an Osteopathic Physician (DO), I believe in the inherent ability of our body’s ability to self-heal. I believe in the holism (Body, Mind and Spirit) of a human being and my goal is to work towards restoring that connectedness and balance in you. The Osteopathic system of care also gives me the extra tool of hands-on healing from Osteopathic Manipulation when applicable to the presenting condition. Science or Art? I believe that the practice of medicine is neither solely a science nor solely an art. Instead, I believe that it is a combination of both. The scientific aspect of medicine is evidenced by the constantly changing understanding of human disease through new discoveries and research. As we sometimes see on the news, the present guidelines for the treatment or prevention of certain conditions may contradict previously-held ones. Therefore, I believe in staying current and prescribing of treatments according to “Evidence-Based Medicine”, which is essentially the most up-to-date understanding that we have in medical science. The art side of medicine is influenced by my personal experience, personality and beliefs. How I practice medicine today is shaped by my medical experience of more than 20 years in both military and civilian communities. My experiences have included practicing medicine in military operational/combat situations; as a full-scope family physician in remote community hospitals, faculty member in residency programs, contributing author to national publications, senior military medical leader and as an out-patient proceduralist for group practices.
