Brenda A. Bednar, CNM

Midwife

Professional Statement
I believe a woman is the expert of her body. I see my role as a certified nurse-midwife is to present information to women, and support them as they make health care decisions based on this information. I love so many aspects of being a midwife, from contraception, well woman care, menopause, teen health, IUDs, implants, pre-conception care and of course pregnancy and birth! I love getting to know my patients and understanding what they want to get out of their visits with me.

I LOVE Brenda! she makes me feel so comfortable, welcome, and taken care of. She remembers personal details about what's going on in my life and listens to my concerns and provides me with a better understanding of my health. she's such a great patient champion and advocate!

Brenda, I'm positive, is very competent...however, I get the impression that she cannot empathize with a very pregnant woman. Her bedside manner isn't super great. With my first child she was the first provider I saw and she did NOT make me feel comfortable about early pregnancy. With this particular visit she asked me if I was interested in talking about my weight gain in a way (tone not words) that I'm sure most women would hear "you've gained way too much..." and that's a nice way to put it. Luckily I had spoken with [...] about it at my last appointment so I was already ok. I think it's important for Brenda to know that they way she comes across sometimes is not empathetic.

I don't enjoy my mid-wife visits it feels more like an unwelcomed therapy session, it's as though I'm supposed to arrive w/concerns & there's a sort of awkward exchange where I'm trying to fill the silence & the idea of depression & therapy is VERY central to the midwife & the need to seek out therapists, support groups is strongly recommended & I feel marked... my last birth I did have post partum depression, but what do you expect when your entire life changes. Any how now it's seems as though this fairly central to my care & it's not enjoyable. I now somewhat loath these visits because I feel it's another time to analyze my mental state.
