Which anxiety medication works best?
First line treatment for anxiety are antidepressant medications. There is no medication for anxiety that is “better” than the others or “best” in clinical trials.
Before considering medication treatment, it is important to ensure that there are not other factors at play. There are some medical conditions (such as thyroid disorders, heart disease, COPD, asthma or certain medications) that can cause or worsen anxiety. It is important that you are working with your doctor to optimally treat those conditions.
It is also critical that you are not using or abusing drugs and alcohol if you are considering using medication treatment for anxiety. Drug and alcohol use (including marijuana) can cause and worsen anxiety. Regular use of those substances will limit the effectiveness of prescribed medications.
We recommend discussing your symptoms with your doctor before partaking in any anti-anxiety medications.
