Information for Observers

The Swedish Medical Center Graduate Medical Education (GME) Department offers observership experiences with the following provider types:

  • Physicians (MD or DO)
  • Physician Assistants (PA)
  • Podiatrists (DPM)
  • Dentists (DMD/DDS)
  • Nurse Practitioners (NP/FNP/ARNP/CNM/CRNA)

If you are interested in arranging an experience with a medical assistant, radiology technician, physical therapist, audiologist, or any other type of Allied Health professional, please contact the Swedish Clinical Education Department: studentonboarding@swedish.org.

A few things to note:
  • Swedish GME does not provide placements. Please search for a provider to precept through our provider listing:  https://www.swedish.org/swedish-physicians

  • Persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to do an observership. Instead, please contact volunteer services.

  • GME does not process observerships for providers (MD/DO, PA, DPM, DMD/DDS) who are either 1) learning procedures or taking training courses from each other, or 2) who are trying to bridge any interim period between not being a privileged provider at Swedish and being a privileged provider at Swedish. In these cases, do not apply through Swedish GME. Instead, please contact medicalstaffservices@swedish.org to inquire about temporary / interim privileges.

OBSERVERS

Swedish Medical Center offers observerships for up to 40 hours in one month, once per academic year (July 1 – June 30).

Please visit www.swedish.org/physicians to find a provider and contact their office directly to arrange placement. The GME office does NOT provide placements with providers. Please complete a Preceptor Agreement with your chosen preceptor (i.e. Physician or Physician Assistant you plan to shadow), and submit with your application.

Once a provider is confirmed for your requested dates, apply at least three (3) weeks in advance of the proposed start date.

Please read the Swedish Medical Center US Observer Policy and Procedures before submitting the application.

All documents need to be uploaded at the time of application submission. Please note that you will not be able to save your place in the application.

If you are currently a Swedish employee and want to complete an observership with a preceptor outside of your department, please contact the GME office directly.
If you are interested in arranging an experience with a nurse/nurse practitioner, medical assistant, radiology technician, physical therapist, audiologist, or any other type of Allied Health professional, please contact the Swedish Clinical Education department: StudentOnboarding@swedish.org
