24th Annual Pain Management Symposium: Goes Virtual - Providing Pain Care in a Whole New World

On-Demand, Accredited, Online Activity - Originally recorded Friday, October 23, 2020

The pandemic has enabled a whole new virtual world for patient care. Increasing pressure on providers has meant they have had to meet these virtual, distanced health needs at a fast pace.  This virtual pain symposium will review the tools and resources needed to better and more easily manage a patient’s pain virtually and safely. International and national speakers, as well as our own expert faculty, will discuss best practices for managing patient care through virtual visits in our expanding online healthcare world, as well as review safe opioid prescribing and the new BREE collaborative chronic opioid management recommendations.  View information about the incredible panel of speakers in the "Faculty" tab below or on the agenda.

With more awareness and availability, patients are also interested in the role of cannabis in the management of their pain.  The afternoon sessions will feature a lively pros and cons of the current, evidence-based research around cannabis and pain management.  The day will wrap up with an overview of new and traditional approaches for joint and soft tissue pain that can play a role in the comprehensive pain management for many of your patients. Lessen the stress of your day-to-day practice with new, practical strategies for pain management in these ever changing times.

Intended Audience: All health care providers who treat patients suffering from acute, chronic or peri-operative pain, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, allied health professionals, and residents in the Northwest. The conference will be most beneficial for the following specialties: Family Medicine, General Medicine, Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Pain Management, Pharmacy, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Needs Assessment

The current COVID-19 pandemic has changed our daily lives in many ways and even more so affected the way we deliver healthcare. While much of the world stopped, the need for healthcare in all specialties, including pain management, continues.  Health care professionals are faced with the challenge of providing and mastering virtual care options quickly and effectively.  As Telehealth is an emerging field, most primary-care and specialty providers were ill-prepared for this quick transition, in need of knowledge of and strategies for online technology options to ease their way in caring for their patients.

Managing comprehensive care plans for patients with pain was already complicated before this pandemic with changing opioid prescription guidelines, new non-pharmaceutical care options, and the emerging questions from patients of the role of cannabis in pain care (especially in states like Washington where recreational use is legal). Health care providers need strategies and information to give patients with pain the best evidence-based, comprehensive care options during these changing times.

This symposium will give health care professionals the knowledge and skills to navigate pain management for patient care in an increasingly virtual world.  It will detail virtual care strategies, and discuss the evidence-based pros and cons of cannabis use, safe opioid prescribing guidelines, and alternative methods of pain management.  Expert faculty will highlight new technologies to consider when creating comprehensive pain management plans for patients.  This information will enable attendees to update their practices for this emerging online healthcare world and provide the best care options for their patients with pain.
