Ultrasound has been used for the evaluation of cerebrovascular disease for decades and has made considerable progress. Transcranial Doppler sonography is a non-invasive, non-ionizing, inexpensive, portable and safe technique for assessment of intracerebral blood flow.
TCD can be performed at the bedside and repeated as needed (even for continuous monitoring). It is non-invasive and does not need a contrast agent. Its chief limitations are that it is an operator dependent technique and requires considerable skill and experience for accurate interpretation.
Despite the clinical usefulness of TCD and TCDI, there are few trained and experienced physicians available to interpret and operators available to perform these studies in many regions of the U.S.
There is a shortage of accredited facilities, experienced physicians, and sonographers in order to appropriately utilize these non-invasive diagnostic tests in many regions across the United States and around the world. There are few comprehensive courses available that teach the applications, performance and interpretation of transcranial Doppler and TCD Imaging, although the clinical utility of this non-invasive ultrasound modality has been well established for the management of patients with vasospasm, stroke and pediatric sickle cell disease.
By attending this course, the participant will provide better patient care through an increased ability to:
- Identify basic principles of intracranial vascular anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology
- Demonstrate the proper techniques for the performance of TCD and TCD Imaging
- Describe clinical applications of TCD
- Recognize normal and abnormal intracranial Doppler spectral waveforms
- Describe the clinical usefulness and limitations of TCD and TCD Imaging techniques
- Apply basic TCD and TCD Imaging interpretation to real cases

Accreditation with Commendation
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Swedish Medical Center and Pacific Vascular, Inc. Swedish Medical Center is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™
Swedish Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 24
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Other Health Professionals
Many credentialing bodies, societies, and boards accept AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ as an equivalent as long as the topic is relevant to the applicant’s field or discipline. If you have any doubts whether an activity will qualify for CE, contact your board prior to registering for the course.
For Nurses
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are accepted for Washington State RN Continuing Education requirements as well as for application and renewal of specialty and advance practice certification through both ANCC and AANP (1 CNE hour is equivalent to 1 CME hour).
