State-of-the-Art Evening Lecture
World Trade Center Seattle
2200 Alaskan Way

Saturday, April 27, 2019
Full-day Conference
Bell Harbor Intl. Conference Center
2211 Alaskan Way
Seattle, Washington

The Friday Evening Lecture will take place at the World Trade Center Seattle, located across the street from Bell Harbor. The Saturday Full-day Course will take place in the Bay Auditorium at Bell Harbor International Conference Center.

This course will combine didactic lectures, case discussions and latest updates on new information presented at the European Association for the Study of the Liver. A state-of-the-art evening lecture on global epidemiology of liver disease by a world-renowned expert will kick off the conference, followed by a reception. The course will feature new information on the diagnosis and treatment of acute-on-chronic liver failure, hepatitis C, NAFLD, cholestatic liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, drug-induced liver injury and liver transplantation presented by nationally recognized faculty. There will be ample time for panel discussion using illustrative cases including interaction with expert faculty. Many clinicians from various disciplines are involved in the care of these patients and an update is necessary for clinicians to provide optimal patient care.

Target Audience
This conference is designed for gastroenterologists, hepatologists, surgeons, radiologists, allied health providers and primary care providers that care for patients with liver disease.

Liver disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and both the prevalence of liver disease as well as deaths from liver disease and liver cancer are increasing. In response, the World Health Organization has called for the elimination of viral hepatitis B and C by 2030. The rapid development of safe and highly effective antiviral regimens for chronic hepatitis C and effective therapies for chronic hepatitis B have made improvements possible in morbidity and mortality from this disease. Recent data suggest that 4 in 10 U.S. adults are obese; nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is present in almost one-third of U.S. adults and a subset of individuals with NAFLD has nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the serious form of NAFLD; one-third of patients with NASH may develop advanced liver disease. New therapies are emerging for chronic cholestatic and autoimmune liver diseases such as primary biliary cholangitis (PBC).

This course will include updates on new therapies for acute-on chronic liver failure, chronic hepatitis C, PBC, NASH and hepatocellular carcinoma. Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a major reason for drugs to be withdrawn and the many biologic and immunomodulatory therapies increase the need for physicians to be updated on DILI. Education on medical weight loss and the impact of novel diabetes therapies on NAFLD is needed.

By attending this course, the participant will provide better patient care through an increased ability to:

  • Describe new developments with regard to diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, NASH and complications of chronic liver disease
  • Interpret the latest data and evidence-based guidelines in bringing continuous quality improvement to patient care and self-learning
  • Describe acute-on-chronic liver failure
  • Identify drug-induced liver injury
  • Explain guidelines for referral of patients with liver disorders for specialty care or transplant
  • Outline the latest clinical data from EASL
  • Provide an update on liver transplantation
