Flight Attendants Medical Research Institute (FAMRI) – International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (IELCAP) Protocol

Purpose: To assess screening for lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cardiac disease, and other diseases in never smokers exposed to secondhand smoke using computed tomographic (CT) examination of the lungs (a test that uses special x-ray equipment to obtain image data from different angles around the body and then uses computer processing of the information to show a cross-section of body tissues and organs).

  • Never smokers exposed to secondhand smoke (must have smoked less than 100 cigarettes in lifetime)
  • 40 years old and over
  • No pregnant women
  • May not have had a CT chest scan in the past 3 years
  • No lung cancer
  • No metastatic cancer (prophylactic treatment is acceptable)
