Dr. Monteith is active in research in cerebrovascular diseases and MR-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery. He has published numerous papers and book chapters on cerebrovascular diseases and their treatment. He was part of the clinical trial team that was the first in the world to treat Essential Tremor non-invasively with MR-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery in 2012. His research work on the non-invasive treatment of brain disorders with this technology was featured on the cover of Journal of Neurosurgery in February 2013.

2004-Current: ANSA (Australasian Neurosurgical Administrator) was programmed in Microsoft Access and codes all admissions under the neurosurgical department.  The program is now ‘live’ on the Auckland Hospital network and is an integral part of the department’s daily operation.  It allows residents and attendings to analyse all admissions with regards to presentation, operative /non-operative management, outcomes /complications, and follow-up.  The reports generated from the system formed the basis of the national morbidity and mortality meeting for Neurosurgery held in Auckland annually.
 

2003-Current: Programming and development of a relational database designed in Microsoft Access: Paediatric brain tumours in New Zealand’s National Children’s Hospital (Starship Hospital).  All paediatric neurosurgical patients admitted since 1995 have been entered.  This database is now an integral part of the paediatric neurosurgical department for audit and research purposes.
