Swedish Mobile Mammography Program
The Swedish Cancer Institute's Mobile Mammography Program delivers potentially life-saving technology to communities that would otherwise have little to no access to advanced breast-cancer screening. The program's goals are to make screening more convenient, increase outreach to underserved communities and reduce the disparities in care due to access.
National leaders in mobile breast cancer screening
In 2004, Swedish's Mobile Mammography Program rose to the national spotlight with the introduction of the Swedish Breast Care Express: a full-service, self contained, 64-foot mammography clinic on wheels. The Express features the latest in digital full-field mammography technology as well as a complete rooftop satellite system enabling the transmission of images to radiologists at Swedish.
In 2008, Swedish officially rolled out its second mobile mammography coach. The new Breast Care Express is a bit smaller than the first Express, which allows it to more easily access in-city venues. The new truck also includes digital mammography, along with a wireless broadband communications system for securely transmitting mammograms back to Swedish.
These coaches provide women, wherever they are located, with the same state-of-the-art mammography offered by the Swedish Breast Centers -- one of the largest and most comprehensive breast-screening networks in the state.
Community participation keeps the breast care express rolling
Thanks in part to our strong community and clinical partnerships, Swedish is able to provide care to women from many backgrounds. On a given day, the Breast Care Express may be parked in a Native American community, an intercity community clinic or a health fair, senior center, a rural area health provider, or at a major regional employer.
With major philanthropic support provided by PACCAR, the Norcliffe Foundation, Amgen Foundation, the Swedish Medical Center Auxiliary/First Hill and many other generous donors, Swedish is able to provide an ever-growing number of women throughout Western Washington access to life-saving mammography screening services.
