Surgical Weight Loss at Swedish Edmonds
If you are severely obese, Weight Loss Services at Edmonds’ bariatric surgery program offers an effective way to lose weight and stop the escalation of life-threatening medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease that are often related to obesity.
Bariatric procedures performed at Swedish Edmonds include:
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: Dividing your stomach in two parts, a small pouch and a large pouch, and creating a bypass from the small pouch to your small intestine. How much food you can eat is reduced and fewer nutrients are absorbed, leading to weight loss.
Adjustable gastric band (LapBand®): Placing an adjustable band around the top part of your stomach to create a small pouch which holds less food and is digested more slowly. You’ll feel full after eating less food, leading to weight loss.
Vertical sleeve gastrectomy: A minimally-invasive procedure to remove about three-quarters of your stomach to create a tube or “sleeve.” The new stomach sleeve holds less food which means you’ll feel fuller faster causing you to lose weight.
Surgeries are performed at Swedish Edmonds by surgeons Alana Chock, Kevin Montgomery and Robert Michaelson. Most procedures are done laparoscopically – a minimally invasive approach that requires smaller surgical incisions and can reduce your healing time.
To be eligible for a bariatric surgery procedure, you must be morbidly obese (weighing at least 100 pounds over your ideal body weight and having a BMI of at least 40). Calculate your BMI. You may also qualify for bariatric surgery with a BMI of 35 to 40 if other serious illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or sleep apnea, are present.
