Vocal Cord Lesions

Vocal Cord Lesions

Vocal fold lesions may be benign (non-cancerous), or malignant.  Benign lesions are often associated with vocal abuse and misuse and include nodules, polyps, cysts, contact ulcers, and granulomas.  A vocal fold cyst is a fluid filled sac in the vocal fold.  Vocal nodules are like callouses on the vocal folds.  They form due to excessive and forceful contact of the vocal folds, often due to unhealthy voice use or poor speaking technique.  Laryngeal papilloma are growths on the larynx or airway caused by a viral process.

In cases of benign vocal fold lesions, voice therapy if very often indicated as a part of your treatment plan.
