Paul Costello, M.D.

Specialty

Family Medicine

Clinical Interests

I love teaching, providing Family Oriented Maternity Care—yes, I deliver babies!—and Family Oriented Palliative Care, having been a volunteer medical director of a 2 bed “hospice house” for 7 years. I perform minor procedures like skin biopsy, joint injections, IUD placement, ingrown toenail care, circumcision. I enjoy caring for families in all ways.

Philosophy of Care

I chose to be a family physician committed to caring for the underserved in 1984 as a sophomore in college when I studied Introduction to Community Medicine and Health & Society. There I first learned about the origins of the specialty, of Neighborhood (now called Community) Health Centers, of primary care and the Biopsychosocial Model of health and illness. I believe in caring for people in the context of their family. I support the definition of family as any group of people related biologically, legally or emotionally.

Personal

I was born and raised in Upstate New York, the youngest of 7 kids. I am happily married to another family physician and together we raise our 3 sons. I value lessons learned from my catholic upbringing and my current Quaker faith tradition. I love to play tennis and to commute to work via bike and bus.

Philosophy of Care

My overarching goal is to partner with you to achieve a rich and full life. For me this means paying equal attention to all of the things that make you who you are: emotionally, physically, psychologically and socially. I hope to work with you to maximize your physical function by treating acute illness and injury, managing chronic disease and offering the best options available to prevent illness and disability. I also recognize the link between emotional and physical health and aspire to help you navigate the difficult times in life. Throughout all of this I acknowledge the social strengths and barriers we all carry with us from our family, friends, community, places of origin and the larger community of the Seattle area we all share.

Personal Hobbies

In another life I received a college degree in classical piano performance, and though I no longer perform I treasure my time both with the piano and the guitar. I try to spend as much time as possible in nature and enjoy a variety of things from backpacking to scuba to snowboarding. I love traveling to other countries and was lucky enough to live for a brief period in Sevilla, Spain. I also harbor a nerdier side that devours science fiction novels and anime cartoons.

Philosophy of Care

I believe my patients are the experts about what it’s like to live in their own bodies, and I am here to be a guide, resource, and cheerleader for each of my patients to reach her or his optimal health. One of the best things about being a family physician is getting to be part of so many different phases of life - through sickness and health, in times of suffering and times of joy.  Listening and being present with each patient is a cornerstone of my practice.  I also believe my job as a doctor is to help people identify “big-picture” barriers to their optimal health, such as difficulties with employment, access to good nutrition, safe housing and other issues, so I try to stay connected with broader social justice work to help make our society healthier.  I am interested in helping our community get activated to take on these challenges together so we can all be our healthiest and happiest!

Personal

I love the arts and enjoy singing and dancing – I love to shake it at Zumba!  I also like to paint, do other art projects and spend time with my partner and friends. I grew up in Eastern Washington and I’ve lived in California, Ecuador, Spain, and South Africa but consider Seattle home.
