Care for Newborns Who Need Extra Help
When things don’t go perfectly, you’re still in great hands.
While most babies enter the world without a hitch, a small percentage need extra care — and Swedish is an especially good place for them to get it. Just a handful of hospitals in our area have a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (also known as a NICU), and the one at Swedish/First Hill is the most experienced. In fact, more than 800 newborns receive care here every year.
In this special nursery, babies as premature as 28 weeks — that’s about three months early — receive care from neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other caregivers who specialize in treating our most delicate and vulnerable patients.
If your baby is born at another Swedish birth center and needs special care, she’ll be brought to the Level III NICU at First Hill in an ambulance designed and equipped just for babies.
