What to Expect

All pediatric sedations begin in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Before sedation, our pediatric intensivist examines your child to make sure they can be safely sedated. Once the exam is complete, the pediatric critical care nurse prepares your child for sedation. Sometimes this means giving an oral medication; other times, inserting an intravenous (IV) catheter using a very small needle. Great care is taken to ensure your child experiences little, if any, discomfort.
