Alternative treatments abound for multiple sclerosis. These are also known as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), non-traditional medicine, alternative medicine and integrative medicine.
Many of these are directed at a healthy lifestyle and general wellbeing. Others are marketed directly for treatment of multiple sclerosis. In general, there are very few rigorous scientific studies of these therapies in multiple sclerosis. The effectiveness and safety of many of these therapies has not been adequately studied. Patients considering their use must weigh potential benefits and side effects, which can be difficult in the absence of reliable data.
