Artificial Hearts/Implantable Cardiac Devices

Artificial hearts are mechanical devices that can be connected directly to a failing heart to help it pump blood through the body. In the past, these devices have been used very rarely. However, newer and smaller models are being developed — such as the left ventricular assist device — that cause fewer complications and can be implanted without any connecting wires or tubes.

This device, which pumps blood through the heart to improve blood pressure and blood flow, is typically used to prolong the lives of patients who are waiting for heart transplants. Such devices will soon become an everyday treatment option for a weak or failing heart.
