The Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI) Esophageal Cancer Program began a resurgence when surgeons Ralph Aye, M.D., and Brian Louie, M.D., teamed up to strengthen the program. The result is a dynamic, multidisciplinary program involving community-based gastroenterologists and oncologists paired with Swedish-based surgeons, gastroenterologists, oncologists and radiation oncologists.
The National Cancer Institute estimates that over 15,000 new esophageal cancers will be diagnosed in the United States in the year 2007. This represents one percent of all cancers and nearly 10 percent of gastrointestinal cancers.
