Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy for Breast Cancer
The Axxent™ Electronic Brachytherapy System is a unique treatment solution to help prevent a recurrence of breast cancer after a lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery) by delivering therapy directly to the cancer site with minimal radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
Swedish was involved in helping develop this method of delivering electronic, x-ray-based radiation therapy for the treatment of early stage breast cancer, and was the first in the Northwest to offer the system to patients.
What is Brachytherapy?
An Advanced Technique for Acceralated Partial Breast Irradiation
Women with breast cancer who do not want a mastectomy often choose a lumpectomy, a reasonable option when followed by daily whole-breast irradiation for six to seven weeks. Another less time-consuming option is Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI), which is given in one week. With APBI, the radiation has to be more focused. Daily variations in patient setup, normal patient movement and breast deformation can lead to problems with focusing the radiation.
Breast brachytherapy is a partial-breast irradiation teqnunique that delivers radiation to the breast tissue surrounding the lumpectomy cavity rather than to the entire breast. By targeting treatment from inside the breast, radiation treatment can be completed in five days, allowing patients to return more quickly to their day-to-day lives.
What Is Axxent™ Electronic Brachytherapy?
The Axxent™ Electronic Brachytherapy System is a unique treatment solution for APBI and was designed to help reduce the recurrence of breast cancer by delivering therapy directly to the cancer site with minimal radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
Electronic brachytherapy delivers more intense therapy directly to cancerous tumors while minimizing radiation exposure to nearby normal tissue. This is done by combining the benefits of external beam radiation therapy with traditional brachytherapy.
Axxent™ Electronic Brachytherapy Benefits
No Need to Isolate Patients During Treatment
Unlike other radiation therapy options that involve radioactive isotopes, with Axxent™ Electronic Brachytherapy the x-ray source can be turned on and off at will, giving radiation oncologists the flexibility to deliver treatments in virtually any clinical setting rather than in heavily shielded environments. This eliminates the need to isolate patients during treatment.
Five Days for Treatment
By targeting treatment from inside the breast, radiation treatment can be completed in five days, allowing patients to return more quickly to their day-to-day lives.
