Since the cause of prostate cancer is unknown, there is no sure-fire way to prevent the disease. But taking certain measures can help lower the risk of prostate cancer:
- Diet and Nutrition: Consuming foods that are low in fat, high in fiber and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and tuna, may help reduce prostate-cancer risk. Foods containing antioxidants may also lower the risk, as well as foods rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins C and D.
- Exercise: Regular exercise can help prevent high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and obesity, which is a potential risk factor for some cancers. Exercise also strengthens the immune system and may reduce the risk of developing an enlarged prostate. Daily exercise is preventative, helps slow the progression of prostate cancer and lowers the risk of aggressive disease.
Finasteride — In June 2003, the National Cancer Institute announced the results of its Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial. Over a period of seven years, men who took the drug finasteride reduced their risk of developing prostate cancer by 25 percent compared with men who took placebo.
