General Information

Brian Sung, M.D., is the Medical Director for the Surgical Program at Swedish Weight Loss. Dr. Sung is a board certified general surgeon and fellowship trained bariatric surgeon. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Sung completed his undergraduate education in California at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Sung received his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine, and returned to his home state of California for his general surgery residency training at Los Angeles County + University of Southern California. During his residency, Dr. Sung was awarded a research fellowship in colorectal surgery in addition to the Resident Teaching Award in 2008. Dr. Sung furthered his training at Stanford University, completing his fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery in addition to being appointed Clinical Instructor. His training in bariatric surgery included the gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band, and revisional bariatric surgery. In addition, Dr. Sung played an integral role in the initial experience of the Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) at Stanford. As part of his minimally invasive training, Dr. Sung is well versed in both general and bariatric surgery applications of robotic, single incision, and endoluminal surgery. Dr. Sung’s introduction to the power of bariatric surgery began as a medical student. He recalls caring for a bariatric patient who preoperatively was a brittle diabetic with significant insulin requirements but postoperatively required no insulin coverage at all. Having such a dramatic impact on a patient’s health and quality of life is why bariatric surgery became his vocation. In addition to spending time with his wife and son, Dr. Sung is an avid outdoorsman and enthusiast of the performing and culinary arts.

Patient Ratings and Comments

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

I have been very happy with care at weight loss clinic.

Dr. Sung seemed angry that I was seeing him. Apparently, I was supposed to follow-up with a nurse or dietitian. I didn't know that. He told me to come back if I had any trouble with weight gain. He said he was supposed to be operating that day - I was wasting his time.

Dr. Sung was easy to talk to and he is very knowledgeable about the work he does.

Dr. Sung is very easy to talk to and he listens to what I say and easily picks up on my concerns.

Incredible physician! Informative and approachable. I am so pleased he is my surgeon!

Dr. Sung Is a very good and thorough Dr. He is always accommodating and explains issues well. I cannot express enough what a mess this office is. It is very unorganized and neither NP or PA are very nice. They both act like you are wasting there time. They want to give you their speech and not listen to your concerns.

Dr. Sung was so thorough I had all my questions answered and left feeling very safe in his care.

Very knowledgeable
