Patient Ratings and Comments
About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

[...] This doctor absolutely defines the care, skill, knowledge and compassion patients are seeking. From the office of my general doctor to the hospital staff at Providence where Dr. Santorelli resides, he is highly thought of and respected. [...] I can't say enough about his demeanor, respect, understanding. Great guy and staff.

I've been told that basically I have two ruptured disks in my back and the only options was spine injections, to which I am now allergic.

My son has severe allergies and sneezed several times, the Dr. seemed very annoyed about it. He specifically stated that "If you don't quiet it down I'm going to have to ask you to leave as I'm speaking about important things". I know it was a nuisance but he couldn't help it so I found it slightly disrespectful.

The problem I had was I had been treated in the emergency room and was to see this specialist within three days. I phoned everyday and was told the doctor had not looked at the tests and they would try to get them to do it the day I would phone. I was very nervous about the tests results [...] . I was not seen for a week and waiting was hard. They could at least have said it was not urgent, then fit me in when they could.

I don't have any negative comments about the provider. [...] I thought Dr. Santarelli was very knowledgeable and explained all options available. He took his time and repeated information as needed. Dr. Santarelli answered all the questions I had. His medical assistant was wonderful and warm.

It seemed as if this Dr was scripted as to what he should say. He just kept repeating the same statement. He did not listen to me and kept interrupting me. I left with no more information than I had when I came. I was crying and he was smiling which I found to be rude. Obviously he has no empathy or caring.

Dr. said he wanted to consult with his colleague because he wasn't 100% certain "which" surgery would be best and that he would have an answer for me within the week. It is now 12 days later and I still have no answer from him. I DO appreciate his interest in consulting with others but if his schedule is so hectic, he should not be advising patients of such an early response. I've been dealing with this issue since last September and was looking forward to seeing a bright light at the end of the tunnel so am quite disappointed at this time.

The provider is a very knowledgeable Doctor and Surgeon, however, at times the provider can be unempathetic to the patients concerns. For example, if I have a list of post-surgical symptoms that I am experiencing, and would like answers to why I may be experiencing them, and how long I should expect to experience them, the provider tends to minimize the concerns and not provide an answer as to why I may be experiencing them. The provider doesn't seem to handle a patient that has done their research on their condition, and would like to share the examples of what they found, and ask questions about the information. Overall, I realize that not all Surgeons can be great at surgery and also great with the empathy that is needed to care for people, it would be nice to have a little more courtesy given when I have concerns about a procedure that I am having done, or the recovery process.

There was a follow up test recommended and possible surgical procedure (two different possibilities) It would have been helpful to have a printed handout about the procedures and exactly what is involved to help make decisions and to decide on the timing.

The scheduling of the pre-op exam was less than organized. I had to call twice to find out when the exam was to take place. [...] I feel that the office should have done this without my having to ask.
