What to do if you suspect your child has an ear infection

January 30, 2013

Ear infections are the most common illness in kids. Almost every child will have at least one ear infection by the age of 5. What do you do when your child complains of ear pain?

Ear pain in children is most often caused by a middle ear infection. These infections often follow an upper respiratory illness, like a cold or the flu. Common symptoms include fever, ear pain and irritability, like not sleeping through the night. It is possible for the buildup of pressure from fluid and infection behind the eardrum to cause the eardrum to rupture. In this situation you will most likely see drainage from the ear.

What should you do if you suspect your child has an ear infection?

  • Treat the pain. Ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) are best.
  • Have a doctor look in your child’s ear to confirm an ear infection.
  • Decide with your doctor...

Patient Ratings and Comments

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

This visit was a discussion of my condition, the history I had with this condition, what it is, the options for taking care of the condition and the timing of what WE are going to do about my condition. I capped WE, because it was a fully included exchange that made me feel empowered.

Trusted her but felt she was a little condescending to some of my concerns and regarding the primary care that had referred me as the condition wasn't as severe as first thought by primary care and she didn't seem to think any of my earlier problems of same type with this ear was as important as I did. I did think she knows what she is doing it was more her manner than her expertise that bothered me.

Health care is hard and communications are tough. It would be helpful to have a plan described for future care so we can know the possible paths. It's been a long and arduous process to get care for my son. It would be helpful to know the possible paths to understand where we are in the possible outcomes.

She was rude to us and was angry when confronted about how long we waited. Could tell she was mad.

I don't feel the diagnosis is and I felt like the Dr was so over booked. Not her fault but I felt like she was very rushed. I was told what she thought it was and handed a leaflet about my condition and the paperwork recommends medicine. I didn't get any kind of prescription.
