In Latin, the word doctor means teacher. In 1991, Dr. Michaelson received his Ph.D. in Neuroendocrinology, and was a member of the faculty at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine. He taught physiology to medical students, while he earned his own Medical Degree. He completed his General Surgery training at the University of California San Diego Medical Center in 2000, and has been recognized for teaching excellence by both the University of Illinois, and UCSD. He went on to complete intense training in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at the Texas Endosurgery Institute; mastering the skill of performing, as he calls it, "major operations through minor incisions”. Dr. Michaelson performed the very first: laparoscopic colon operations; hernia repairs; spleen, kidney, and adrenal gland removals as well as many other advanced laparoscopic procedures at Providence Regional Medical Center. In 2006 he joined the surgical team at Northwest Weight Loss Surgery, and has focused on the treatment of obesity ever since.
Throughout his career, Dr. Michaelson has taken every opportunity to teach fellow surgeons in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgical techniques. He has taught hundreds of surgeons throughout the United States and China. He has had a particularly active role in the Puget Sound area, teaching other physicians how to treat and manage weight loss surgery patients. Dr. Michaelson was selected as the only bariatric surgeon to speak in front of an FDA Advisory Panel in Washington, D.C. His testimony played a pivotal role in extending the indications for the gastric banding to 27 million additional Americans - this was one of the highlights of his career.
Dr. Michaelson is Board Certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Obesity Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery; Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons; Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society; and the Seattle Surgical Society. He is Vice-President of the Washington State Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and was honorably retired from the Medical Corps of the United States Navy after 23 years of service to our country. He has been named one of Seattle’s "Top Docs” for the past three consecutive years, and the "”Best of Western Washington’s” Best Doctor in 2008.Dr. Michaelson is also one of the two Physicians in the Pacific Northwest who is Board Certified by The American Board of Obesity Medicine. An obesity medicine physician is a physician with expertise in the sub-specialty of obesity medicine. This sub-specialty requires competency in and a thorough understanding of the treatment of obesity and the genetic, biologic, environmental, social, and behavioral factors that contribute to obesity. The obesity medicine physician employs therapeutic interventions including diet, physical activity, behavioral change, and pharmacotherapy. The obesity medicine physician utilizes a comprehensive approach, and may include additional resources such as nutritionists, exercise physiologists, psychologists and bariatric surgeons as indicated to achieve optimal results. Additionally, the obesity medicine physician maintains competency in providing pre- peri- and post-surgical care of bariatric surgery patients, promotes the prevention of obesity, and advocates for those who suffer from obesity.

In his free time, Dr. Michaelson enjoys most activities on the water, especially spending time with his family. He looks forward to teaching you as you begin your weight loss journey and after as your new life unfolds.
