5 things to know about cancer screenings

February 05, 2014

However, many deaths can be prevented when cancer is detected at an early stage. Cancer screening and risk assessment tests are the tools we use to find cancers early.

How do we find early cancers?

Some cancer screenings can be done yourself at home at essentially no cost or risk. This includes regular self-examination of the breasts, testicles and skin. Home fecal occult blood testing can also be done to screen for colorectal cancer. Additional information on cancer screening and self-examinations can be found on websites such as www.cancer.org or www.webmd.com.

Other screening requires medical interventions. There is good evidence that well-targeted screening sa...

Patient Ratings and Comments

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

Over the past 7 years, I have had various care providers at Swedish Hospital. Without any exceptions, they were all and always excellent !

Dr. Milder is my "family oncologist". He cared for my mother during her colon cancer and has helped me through two serious cancer treatments. He excels. He is trustworthy. He is a blessing to those whom he treats.

I have confidence in Dr Milder's expertise. I think the clinic is somewhat dysfunctional-suspect that communication might not be the best. I am not violently ill - it is clear that my chronic disease is of minor importance to the clinic compared to their other patients - an opinion which I could agree with. Nevertheless - my experience of being newly diagnosed could have been much easier and I am looking for care elsewhere.

I was very impressed with Dr. Milder. He spoke to me face to face, rather than face to computer like some clinicians. He took lots of time for me to express my concerns and was a very good listener. He explanations were clear and well reasoned. He is someone that makes you feel confident about his medical decisions. It was a pleasure consulting with him.
