Additional Information:

Dr. Lora Plaskon’s inspiration for practicing urogynecology started in childhood experiences and later through influential role models founding the field of urogynecology. Urogynecology is a melding of urology and gynecology - a synthesis of the best of both fields aimed at improving women's lives from their most intimate core.

At Indiana University Medical School in her gynecology clerkship, Dr. Plaskon found her calling while studying under Dr. J. Thomas Benson. Dr. Benson founded the first accredited Urogynecology training program in the nation, and was a very thoughtful, influential leader in establishing the field of Urogynecology. “Urogynecology is a restorative field of medicine, reestablishing function and anatomy to the pelvic structures, which really appealed to my inner engineer and satisfied that little girl inside me who wanted to help her mother feel better.”

Residency training brought Dr. Plaskon out West in the 1990’s, and the fledgling field of Urogynecology was being developed primarily by women physicians in Urology in Seattle. Therefore, she pursued her training in Urology at University of Washington. While in her academic Urology Residency, Dr. Plaskon was the first in her program to complete a National Institute of Health Fellowship earning her Master of Science in Epidemiology during residency. Her early research focused on pelvic floor problems associated with childbirth. The breadth and depth of Female Urology in the University of Washington program surpassed many Urogynecology Fellowships at the time.

After Residency, Dr. Plaskon was at a crossroads of choosing academia or private practice, and she returned to her childhood inspiration of delivering Urogynecologic care in a women's focused environment, thus Athena Women's Health was founded. Dr. Lora Plaskon and co-founder, Dr. Anita Cassis, established Athena for women only and committed to a mission of compassion, education, choice, research, advocacy, and state-of-the-art excellence in medical and surgical care.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Plaskon’s expertise is in helping women deal with recurrent bowel, bladder, and sexual issues related to pelvic floor prolapse, or laxity in the vaginal tissues that can occur with childbirth, and aging. Many of her patients have had at least one failed surgery prior to coming to Athena, and are seeking nonsurgical options or a state of the art surgical repair. Dr. Plaskon has helped women through difficult cases of complex pelvic reconstruction and has done over 1000 cases of successful mesh- graft implants. She also helps women with vaginal mesh removal or scar revisions.

Personal Interests

Dr. Lora Plaskon and her husband, General Surgeon Dr. Brian Plaskon, volunteer locally and internationally in medical missions bringing care to the underserved. Along with her two children, and 2 dogs, the Plaskon family enjoys their time together hiking in the mountains and exploring the coastal waters of the Northwest.
