Biography & Education

I am grateful for the opportunity to listen to patients concerns and to find ways to help them achieve their personal goals. Its rewarding to learn from patients as I educate them about their health issues and offer them treatment options tailored to their specific needs. I have completed fellowship training to benefit patients with diseases of the sinus and nasal airway and collaborate with my colleagues in the Department of Neurosurgery to offer minimally invasive endoscopic approaches to lesions of the anterior skullbase.

Rinsing: The Single Best Thing You Can Do to Keep Your Nose Happy

July 24, 2013
One of the best parts of living and practicing in Seattle (Ballard in particular) is that I see my patients everywhere I go! Just this last weekend I ran into patients buying bagels, at the Ballard farmer’s market, and walking around Greenlake. One patient I saw recently asked about her husband who was always complaining about his nose but she hasn’t been able to drag him into my office to be evaluated.  She asked me, “What can I have him do to at home to help his nose?” For home care, I may recommend my patients rinse their nose with saline once a day.  Nasal saline irrigation has been well studied in controlled trials and has been shown to improve nasal symptom scores regardless of whether the nose is bothered by sinusitis or allergies.  It is one

Patient Ratings and Comments
About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

He was very rushed and I did not feel like I could interject with all the questions I had. He never really even asked me any questions, so how could he really form an opinion? Also, if I did not already have 21 years of medical experience, I would have been totally lost regarding his "explanation" of what he thought might be going on. Before I knew what happened, the appointment was over without really any opportunity for discussion. I will likely be following up elsewhere.

Dr. Chan's manner was attentive, but brisk, I felt rushed at times

Again, very nice man and I was confident he knew what he was doing but I wish he would have explained exactly what he did. I didn't think to ask him while I was there so that is my fault but he always seemed to be in a hurry.
Swedish Patient

This doctor is the 3rd specialist that I've seen concerning a debilitating circumstance. Each visit was rushed. I understand that many times, doctors have time limits on patient visits. However when seeing a specialist for something that has been an issue for over 6 months, I expect more than 5 minutes to talk to a new doctor. He jumped to diagnose my problem before hearing my history. I clarified the symptoms, and his response changed and he made a referral for testing. After the testing, I was unsure what the conclusion was. He told me to "google it" and "youtube" it and tell him my thoughts. After my research I decided to have minor surgery. He/his office never called to follow-up after the surgery. I will be returning to have the second surgery that I need, and then I will no longer see this doctor.

Felt the dr. was somewhat distracted. I felt he was thinking about other things, not focused.
Swedish Patient

Dr Chan was great. He listened to my concerns and spent time explaining the general treatment despite the fact that he ended up needing to refer me to a plastic surgeon. I knew little about what I needed to fix my nose except that surgery would be involved, and left feeling like I knew exactly what was going on and confident that he referred me to a good doctor. I left that doctors office just this morning, and am grateful that Dr Chan referred meto such a wonderful specialist.
Swedish Patient

Having a 3rd person in the consultation room destroys my sense of confidentiality in my discussion with the doctor.
Swedish Patient

Because my condition is pretty common, there wasn't a whole lot of discussion because for him it was normal. For me, my nose bleeding consistently for no reason isn't common. He was very nice and explained things but seemed to be in kind-of a hurry because it was just a nose bleed after all.
Swedish Patient

I felt rushed, and the copy of the pathologist report I received contained slightly different info than provided by doctor.
