When should I have my first pelvic exam?

October 18, 2013

A good time to schedule a visit with a gynecologist (or women’s health specialist) is when you first have problems or concerns with menstrual periods, including premenstrual moods, acne around menses, vaginal discharge or any other cyclic discomfort. That appointment will involve a conversation about what is bothering you and may include a pelvic exam or may not. Likely the doctor will ask you questions and together you will decide whether or not an exam is necessary.

Patient Ratings and Comments

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

Care provider did not give a second thought to my worries and concerns and the procedure that I came there specifically to discuss, and dismissed it offhand without giving another option that might help. This care provider also promised that they would follow up with me at a later date, but never did. I will not be returning to this care provider, and will make it known the lack of respect they showed me, and will make sure my friends and family know never to go to this particular provider.

Dr. Block is an excellent physician and greatly calmed my fears re: surgery. She gave me options and throughly explained these choices. Everything she told me would happen post-op was completely accurate and the whole experience was much easier than I expected. I highly recommend her.

The doctor didn't look at me until about 10 minutes into the visit. She spent her time looking at the computer and was very cold. My regular doctor was on leave and I would not go back to this substitute doctor.

Need to return to office as pap smear was insufficient. Not sure what that means and the person who called me did not know the answer to my question. I assume not enough cells were gathered for testing?
