Our Approach

Swedish First Hill is home to one of seven kidney transplant centers and one of just four liver transplant centers serving the entire Pacific Northwest. Over the past 20 years, our surgeons have performed more than 2,000 kidney transplants in our state-of-the-art surgical facilities. Our multidisciplinary teams are led by highly-skilled transplant surgeons to provide quality care for kidney, liver and pancreas transplants.

The Organ Transplant Center at Swedish is at the forefront of new advances in transplantation surgery, including pancreas transplants and transplants between unrelated living organ donors and recipients.

A kidney transplant offers a patient with kidney failure the opportunity to lead a healthier, more normal life. Kidney transplants are the most common of all solid-organ transplants, and the results are generally very good.

The kidney transplant program at Swedish brings together expertise from cardiology, infectious disease, vascular, pathology and radiology to ensure your medical condition is fully optimized to take advantage of the opportunity of a kidney organ offer. This multidisciplinary approach has allowed our patients with some of the most challenging medical conditions to safely receive a successful kidney transplant. The Swedish one-year kidney survival rate exceeds the national average.

Swedish’s liver transplant team is dedicated to bringing new hope and the gift of prolonged life to patients who suffer from end stage liver disease and acute liver failure. The liver transplant team works closely with the Liver Center team to devise comprehensive, patient-centered assessments and treatments of end stage liver disease and acute liver injury.

Swedish’s Pancreas Transplant Team is dedicated to restoring patients requiring lifelong insulin therapy to their optimum health by combining individualized, patient-centered care with the latest advances in pancreas transplant technology, state of the art operating facilities, and highly skilled surgeons.

Most pancreas transplants are performed at the same time as kidney transplants in patients with diabetes or after the kidney transplantation. The Pancreas Transplant team works closely with the Kidney Transplant team to develop individualized and comprehensive solutions to patients requiring pancreas transplantation.

Patients with Type I diabetes who still have preserved kidney function but have severe complications from diabetes are also considered for pancreas alone transplantation.
