High-Risk Obstetrics: Tools for the Family Physician will provide the opportunity for participants to improve competencies in the management of medically complicated obstetrical patients in a family practice setting. This course will address barriers to optimal patient care, such as maternal obesity, gestational diabetes, advanced maternal age, and other pre-pregnancy conditions of the mother. Current and controversial topics including changes in the evaluation of labor patterns, setting guidelines for exercise in high-risk pregnancy and treatment of the patient with a shortened cervix will be presented in comprehensive lectures and fast-paced rapid-fire updates. The afternoon workshops and small group discussions, led by expert faculty, will focus on external fetal monitoring, the principles of managing post-partum hemorrhage and using ultrasound to determine fetal position and the amniotic fluid index. A special workshop on the Aldo Vacca Vacuum Technique will be offered concurrently throughout the morning lectures and the afternoon workshops.
