ABC – After Breast Cancer: What’s Next?

A free six-week group for women to learn practical life skills to help rebuild after active breast cancer treatment is completed.

Active Women, Healthy Women

Women of all fitness levels are encouraged to join this certified instructor led class. From cancer patients to survivors, there is an exercise activity appropriate for you. Co-sponsored by Team Survivor Northwest, this class focuses on stretching, strength training and cardio-workouts. This class is offered in Issaquah and Edmonds on a weekly basis. Cancer and Finances 101

When you or a loved one receives a cancer diagnosis, money is likely the last thing that you want to think about. And yet you may find yourself worrying about how you are going to pay for treatment. Taking control of these financial concerns right from the start can help to alleviate some of that stress. The class will help you understand the direct and indirect costs of treatment, and introduce you to community resources and governmental programs that are available to assist with healthcare costs.

Join us for this 60-minute class taught by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist from Swedish Cancer Institute. You will learn about the powerful role of nutrition in living above and beyond cancer for prevention and survivorship. You will also learn how changes to your environment and lifestyle can impact health and longevity.

Creative Infusion

The writing prompts and activities in this class are designed to help you unleash your creativity in an easy, non-threatening way. Give yourself permission to let go, explore, create, and express yourself through poems, story, lists, or images. There is no "right way" to participate and whether or not you share your work is entirely up to you. No writing experience required.

Does Sugar Feed Cancer?

Join this class sponsored in partnership with Northwest Natural Health. When you’re eating to beat cancer, do you need to completely shun sugar? There’s more to the concept of “sugar feeds cancer” than stowing the sugar bowl and declining dessert. You will learn about the role of insulin resistance in cancer growth, why cancer cells prefer sugar, and nutrition strategies for stabilizing blood sugar.

Don’t Keep Putting It Off

An SCI oncology social worker will explain the elements of end-of-life planning, including medical power-of-attorney, living wills, and hospice. Relevant handouts provided.

Music and Wellness

Experience how music can be incorporated into your everyday life to promote relaxation and wellness while reducing pain, stress and anxiety. Join Board Certified Music Therapist, Betsy Hartman, in experiencing first-hand the benefits of music while taking away simple techniques and tools that you can use on a daily basis. No prior music experience or confidence required.

ONLINE: Talking to Someone with Cancer: Don’t let Fear Stop You

It can be challenging to communicate with a loved one about their cancer. Oncology social worker Tricia Matteson at Swedish Cancer Institute will be joined by SCI patient Allison to discuss tips and strategies for offering support in a sensitive and caring manner.

Principles of T’ai Chi – Mini Series

Join this mini-series to learn simple movements to ground, balance and relax. The Principles of T-ai Chi provides an opportunity to learn an awareness practice for centering and calming the mind and body. There is currently good research on the benefits of tai chi for balance, stress reduction, pain, anxiety and depression. No prior experience is necessary. Four sessions.

Renewal through Art and Music

Experience the therapeutic use of art and music as you explore seasonal themes of transition and renewal in a supportive group setting. Art and music therapy can promote wellness, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase self-awareness. Register for one, two or all sessions of this 3-part series. No prior experience or creative confidence required. Co-lead by Nicole Stiver, Art Therapist and Betsy Hartman, Music Therapist.

Yoga for People with Cancer

Create balance in the body, breath and mind in this therapeutic class with registered yoga instructor, Ann Ford. No experience necessary. Bring a mat and blanket. Four sessions.

Exercise

Chair-Supported Yoga

Classes are offered at Swedish Edmonds on the 4th Floor, Mondays and Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm. (excluding holidays).

This easy alternative to regular yoga utilizes a chair for help in transitioning to and from the floor, and for certain seated exercises.

Fee: $12/class, payable in class by check or cash only. First class is free.

Lifestyle Management

This is a medically supervised exercise and education program for individuals living with, or at risk of developing, heart disease. Individuals with heart disease, diabetes/prediabetes and high blood pressure or cholesterol will benefit from the program, which focuses on controlling risk factors and making positive lifestyle changes.

Do you know what healthcare treatments you would and would not want if you could not speak for yourself? Join us for a free advance care planning workshop that will guide participants through understanding and completion of their advance care planning documents. All participants will leave the workshop with completed documents and the ability scan their forms into Swedish medical records at the end of the workshop.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction - 8 Week Series

Mindfulness based stress reduction offers you instruction in mindfulness meditation, gentle yoga and a range of strategies to manage stress and physical symptoms.  This eight week class is designed to complement your medical care or help you manage the day to day stresses of life.

This class teaches coping techniques for people with pain-limiting conditions. Topics include an overview of the anatomy and physiology of pain, stress management, pacing, goal setting and logging, home therapies, nutrition and supplements, and hope, happiness and healing. Preoperative Joint Seminar (scheduled surgery)

This one-hour seminar will inform you about what to expect before surgery, during your hospital stay and for the first several weeks after surgery. This class will include recommendations on how to prepare your home for a comfortable recovery. This class is strongly recommended for patients scheduled to have a joint replacement surgery at Swedish Edmonds or the Swedish Orthopedic Institute (Downtown Seattle).  Preoperative Joint (Scheduled Surgery)

Growing Up: All About Puberty

This class provides a perfect opportunity to build a bridge with your 9- to 12-year-old to demystify the challenges of puberty. The focus of this fun, interactive class is to open and enhance communication between parents and preteens and explain the physical and emotional changes ahead. Taught in partnership with Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest.
