A New Year’s Resolution: Be More Active

To all of our patients, caregivers, families and friends, the MS Center would like to extend greetings for a joyful holiday season and a wonderful new year.
As 2016 approaches, many people will resolve to be more active. The MS Center couldn't agree more! Numerous studies have shown that exercise and targeted therapy for Multiple Sclerosis have the following benefits:
- Less fatigue
- Improved balance
- Improved walking endurance and speed
- Cognitive improvement
- Improvement in general heart health
- Enhanced brain and spinal cord neuroplasticity
- Less spasticity
- More range of motion in joints and muscles
- Production of endorphins, which reduce depressive symptoms and stress
- Production of brain-derived peptides, which may enhance neuronal sprouting
Studies have shown that movement in MS is cumulative, so a few more steps at home or out can make a difference in a patient’s rehab. For our non-ambulatory patients, more leg stretches or moving one’s arms while in a wheelchair can help. Perhaps consider coming to one of the many MS Center wellness classes or open gym sessions -- or get a pedometer to measure your daily steps. It all adds up!
In addition to our physical therapy and rehabilitation program, the MS Center is excited to announce the arrival of our new occupational therapist, Simon Gale, OT/L.
