Free relaxation & stress reduction classes for multiple sclerosis

Stress is something we all experience. At work, home and in relationships—life is a balancing act. For people living with multiple sclerosis (MS), stress can also come from managing major transitions and other emotional changes.
How we respond to stress that determines how it affects our lives. Luckily, we have some control. Learned relaxation techniques can help us manage how we respond to stress and lower its affects before we become overwhelmed.
Alex Koenig is a psychology student with the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Swedish who will be teaching a new class focusing exclusively on stress-reduction and relaxation techniques. Alex designed the class to help patients learn skills and resources they can use to cope with anxiety and stress in everyday life.
Weekly classes will focus on breathing and mindfulness techniques that you can practice daily to manage your stress and help your mind and body relax. Participants will learn how the body responds to stress and how deep breathing can stop the stress response, and practice relaxation techniques like diaphragmatic breathing.
Participants will learn several different techniques, including mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation and visualization. It is a beginner-level class, and patients and/or caregivers living with MS can drop-in anytime without missing a beat.
Not only is Alex leading the relaxation and stress reduction classes, she is also a new member of the Multiple Sclerosis Center care team. Alex provides psychology services to patients as part of her practicum for earning her doctoral degree.
Meet her and join the group every Monday, beginning September 9, 2013, from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Alex is also available to speak and share demonstrations with support groups.
