Swedish Policy Protects LGBT Employees Against Discrimination

Recently, incorrect and misleading information on social media has called into question Swedish’s commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful work environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) staff.
Included here is accurate information and copies of current Swedish policies. We encourage you to share this information with your friends, family and coworkers.

Below is an excerpt from our policies (links to full copies of the policies are below). We encourage you to share this information.

Swedish Non-Discrimination and Non-Harassment Policy:

Discrimination against another person for any reason, including race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, national origin, citizenship, language, veteran or marital status, sexual orientation, gender expression/identity, or the presence of any disability, or perceived disability, and all other bases prohibited by local, state, or federal law will not be tolerated. Harassment based on the classes listed above is also considered a form of discrimination and will not be tolerated.
Examples of discrimination and prohibited conduct include, but are not limited to:

  • Epithets, slurs, negative stereotyping or threatening, intimidating or hostile acts that relate to sex, sexual orientation, race, color, creed, religion, age, national origin, language, veteran status, marital status, or disability.
  • Written, electronic, or graphic material displayed or circulated in our workplace that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual or group because of sex, sexual orientation, race, color, creed, religion, age, national origin, language, veteran status, marital status, or disability.
  • Differential treatment because of a person’s sex, sexual orientation, race, color, creed, religion, age, national origin, language, veteran status, marital status, or disability.
  • Remarks, gestures, display or circulation of written materials, pictures or other items which could be considered derogatory or have the purpose or effect of interfering with a person’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment based on the person’s sex, sexual orientation, race, color, creed, religion, age, national origin, language, veteran status, marital status, or disability.
With respect to sexual harassment, examples of prohibited conduct include, but are not limited to:
  • Vulgar, graphic, sexual or suggestive comments, jokes, stories and innuendo, including but not limited to voicemails and telephone calls, e-mails or text messages.
  • Leering, inappropriate touching and obscene or suggestive gestures.
  • Displaying sexually suggestive photographs or cartoons.
  • Unwelcome and repeated flirtations, requests for dates, etc.
  • Demanding sexual favors in exchange for a promotion, raise, or other condition of employment.
The provision of detailed information in this policy on one of the most commonly alleged types of harassment – sexual harassment – should not be interpreted to suggest a lessened commitment to the prevention of other types of unlawful harassment. No type of unlawful harassment is acceptable at Swedish.
Swedish also strictly prohibits retaliation in response to an individual’s decision to make an allegation of discrimination or harassment, or their participation in an investigation. Retaliation includes both direct and indirect actions that negatively alter a person’s working environment. Examples of conduct which may constitute retaliation include, but are not limited to, treating the employee who has made a complaint of discrimination or harassment in a “non-professional” manner or otherwise taking action against that employee either directly or indirectly.

In 2012, Swedish affiliated with Providence Health & Services. Swedish and Providence share the goal of establishing a discrimination-free work environment for all employees and job applicants. Providence last updated its policy in 2011. Below, we have included text from the Providence Equal Employment Opportunity policy:

Providence will also endeavor to reasonably accommodate employees with disabilities and the religious beliefs of employees.

Becker’s Hospital Review names Swedish/Cherry Hill a Top 100 Hospital for Patient Engagement

Swedish highest ranked Washington state hospital in the 2014 Patient Engagement Ranking

SEATTLE — May 15, 2014 — Swedish Medical Center announced today its Cherry Hill campus was named a Top 100 Hospital in the inaugural National Patient Engagement Ranking by Becker’s Hospital Review and Axial Exchange. With a score of 78.7 out of 100, Swedish/Cherry Hill was the highest ranked among three Washington state hospitals recognized on the Top 100 list.

National rankings evaluated more than 3,000 U.S. hospitals. Scores were based on publicly available data such as readmissions and patient satisfaction as well as tools and resources available to help patients better manage their health. For example, social media interaction and online support, including health records and mobile/tablet/desktop tools were reviewed. More details on the rankings and methodology can be found here.

Becker’s Hospital Review and Axial Exchange announced the results for the 100 Top Hospitals for Patient Engagement at the Becker’s Hospital Review 5th Annual Meeting in Chicago, May 15-17.

Swedish/First Hill Receives Fifth Consecutive ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety

Four Swedish hospitals achieve top safety ranking awarded by the Leapfrog Group

SEATTLE — May 7, 2014 — Swedish Health Services’ Ballard, Edmonds, First Hill and Issaquah hospitals have received ‘A’ grades for patient safety in the Spring 2014 update to the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Score. Swedish/First Hill has now received a top patient safety rating from Leapfrog for five straight score releases, making it one of only 251 hospitals in the nation to do so.
Swedish/Issaquah earned a top grade for the first time it was eligible.
“At Swedish, safety is our greatest commitment to patients, and that is why we constantly refer to our Culture of Safety,” said Swedish Chief Executive Anthony Armada. “This recognition by Leapfrog is greatly appreciated and humbling, but safety is more than just a goal, it is a never-ending process that is at the heart of the care we provide.”

Dr. Elizabeth Meade discusses marijuana use and kids on New Day Northwest

Assistant Chief of Pediatrics at Swedish Medical Center, Elizabeth Meade, M.D., joined New Day Northwest host Margaret Larson on a special episode dedicated to marijuana in Washington State.

Dr. Meade discussed the impacts marijuana use can have on children and adolescents, as well as things parents should be aware of thinking about marijuana use and their children.

Richard Sherman’s cancer ‘rant’ goes viral, tops 100,000 views

One week ago today, we posted a YouTube video of Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman sounding off on cancer as part of the Swedish Cancer institute’s campaign o spread the word about the launch of its new Personalized Medicine Program.

We had no idea the video would quickly go viral. This morning, the video topped 100,000 views on YouTube.
Not only has the video struck a chord with so many viewers who can relate to the need for a better approach to fighting cancer, it has also grabbed the attention of the media. Here is just a sampling of all the news outlets that have posted, covered or shared it on social media:

SEATTLE — April 28, 2014 — The Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI) today announced its new Personalized Medicine Program that combines advanced medical treatments based on the unique, molecular signature of a patient’s cancer with supportive care that is designed to serve each individual’s physical and emotional health.
“Patients diagnosed with cancer often find themselves having to choose between advanced treatment programs typically associated with academic or research centers, and the patient-centered care they expect from their community hospital,” said SCI Executive Director Thomas Brown, M.D. “The Swedish Cancer Institute has a long history of extraordinary care, and with the addition of genomic medicine, we are continuing our legacy of giving patients the best of both worlds, now through our Personalized Medicine Program.”
Each patient is unique at the cellular level, so understanding the molecular fingerprint of an individual’s cancer helps guide treatment decisions. Combined with the comprehensive social services available to address the complex needs of patients and their families, SCI is striving to provide the most comprehensive, best-practice approach to treating cancer.

To kick-off the Personalized Medicine Program, SCI is launching a public awareness campaign that includes informative content on SwedishCancerInstitute.org as well as television spots, the first of which features Seattle Seahawks All-Pro Cornerback Richard Sherman.
