Swedish Celebrates Nurses' Week (May 6-12)

May 01, 2015

In Recognition of Nurses' Week, Margo Bykonen, RN, Chief Nursing Officer, Shares a Special Message to Nurses

It is with pride and heartfelt appreciation that I write this message to every nurse at Swedish during this year's Nurses' Week — to represent nursing at Swedish is truly an honor.

The theme for this year's Nurses' Week is "Ethical Practice, Quality Care." As I reflect on the ANA Nursing Code of Ethics and consider the work of the nurses at Swedish, the connection is very apparent.

Provision 1 (ANA Nursing Code of Ethics):

The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems.

On every campus each and every day, you are caring for patients in profound ways; you are there to support, to listen, to coach, to teach, to advocate and to ensure that every patient has the best possible outcome.

Provision 3 (ANA Nursing Code of Ethics):

The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect health, safety and the rights of the patient.

Collectively, nurses at Swedish are engaged in efforts to improve patient care. Whether it be conducting research, evaluating best practice or involvement in nursing quality initiatives, our patient care is extraordinary because of your work.

Provision 7 (ANA Nursing Code of Ethics):

The nurse participates in the advancement of the profession through contributions to practice education, administration, and knowledge development.

Nurses at Swedish are truly focused on professional practice. Continued education, certification, participation in shared leadership and involvement in our journey toward ANCC designation are just a few examples of this work. Together, we are creating a practice environment that is exceptional.

As in our country and community changes and transforms, there are foundational elements of nursing that will remain constant.

Provision 2 (ANA Nursing Code of Ethics):

The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group or community.

Nursing, at its core, is about care, compassion and commitment to our patients. This is the work you do each and every day and for all these reasons, I want to sincerely thank you.

Happy Nurses' Week.
