SEATTLE, Wash., August 8, 2013 — The American Hospital Association (AHA) today named John Vassall, M.D., to its Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees makes policy for the AHA and has authority over its governance and management. Dr. Vassall, chief medical officer at Swedish Medical Center, joins seven other new board members who will begin their three-year terms on Jan. 1, 2014.
The AHA is a national organization representing nearly 5,000 hospitals, health care networks, and other care providers. Through its advocacy activities, AHA ensures that members' perspectives and needs are heard and addressed in national health policy development, legislative and regulatory debates, and judicial matters.
Prior to his appointment on the Board of Trustees, Dr. Vassall served on AHA’s Regional Policy Board 9 since 2011. Known for his longstanding regional and national leadership, Dr. Vassall is past president of the University of Washington School of Medicine Alumni Association. He was a Washington State Medical Association delegate to the American Medical Association from 1987 until 2012 and served as speaker of the House of Delegates for the Washington State Medical Association. He is a member of the Boards of Trustees for both the Washington State Hospital Association and the Washington State Medical Association.
In his role on the Board of Trustees, Dr. Vassall will continue his advocacy for healthier communities. “The mission and vision of Swedish and the American Hospital Association closely align,” said Dr. Vassall. “We’re each committed to improving the health of the communities we serve, reducing the cost of healthcare and improving the patient experience. I’m looking forward to making a leadership contribution on the national level through the AHA.”
Swedish has grown over the last 103 years to become the largest non-profit health-care provider in the Greater Seattle area. It is comprised of five hospital campuses (First Hill, Ballard, Cherry Hill, Edmonds and Issaquah); ambulatory care centers in Redmond and Mill Creek; and Swedish Medical Group, a network of more than 100 primary-care and specialty clinics located throughout the Greater Puget Sound area. In addition to general medical and surgical care, including robotic-assisted surgery, Swedish is known as a regional referral center, providing specialized treatment in areas such as cardiovascular care, cancer care, neuroscience, orthopedics, high-risk obstetrics, pediatric specialties, organ transplantation and clinical research.
