Don Theophilus

Don Theophilus

President, Swedish Medical Center Foundation
Chief Development Officer, Swedish Health Services

Don Theophilus oversees all aspects of the Foundation and works with the medical center’s senior administrators, board members and community leaders to seek private donations for Swedish. He works to establish meaningful partnerships with donors who have a passion for the medical center and the care it provides patients.

Prior to joining Swedish in 2003, Theophilus had managed corporate and foundation relations (CFR) at the University of Colorado (CU) Foundation since March 2000. In that role, he helped coordinate relationships between the university’s four campuses and key corporations and foundations. He worked closely with senior staff at the Foundation, the four campuses and the president’s office to maximize university support and helped match the interests and needs of these external partners with the strengths of the university community.

Before joining CU, Theophilus had been interim senior director of CFR at the University of Michigan and was offered the permanent position. Prior to becoming interim senior director in June 1999, he was associate director and had served in that capacity since September 1996. In that role, Theophilus coordinated the university's relationships with information technology, aerospace and defense, and chemical companies. He also coordinated relationships with the Packard and Sloan foundations. Before joining Michigan’s central CFR office, Theophilus worked in the university's College of Engineering, where he joined Engineering's College Relations staff in June 1995 as associate director of CFR. In that capacity, he was responsible for much of the college's corporate and foundation fund raising.

Prior to going to Michigan, Theophilus was manager of special projects at the University of Washington's Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HITL), one of the world's leading research centers for virtual reality and other aspects of human-computer interaction. In that role, he sought gift and grant support to further the HITL's research and development goals.

Before embarking on a career in university development, Theophilus practiced law with the firm Stafford Frey Cooper in Seattle. He earned his law degree from the U.W. School of Law and his bachelor's in business administration from the University of Puget Sound and Stichting Nijenrode, The Netherlands School of International Business. In addition, he is a graduate of the U.W.'s Non-Profit Fund-Raising Management Certificate Program and a member of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.
