Current Exercise Concepts for People with Parkinson’s Disease

Research over the last several years has shown the positive benefits of exercise for people with Parkinson’s disease. Participants in physical therapy exercise programs demonstrate improved reaction time and balance, increased endurance and augmented strength. These gains in function can result in decreased falling, more energy to get around the home or community, and ultimately a better quality of life.

Evidence also points to HOW you exercise as an important variable in slowing the disease process. Concepts such as neural priming, movement visualization, whole body exercise, and intensity of practice all contribute to functional gains for people with PD.

Mindfulness for Childbirth and Parenting

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is defined by Nancy Bardacke, author of Mindful Birthing, as "the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally. It is cultivated through meditation practice and can help you navigate the uncharted waters that lie ahead with more joy, kindness, awareness, calm and wisdom than you might have otherwise. Mindfulness is a universal capacity of the human mind, but unless we intentionally choose to cultivate it, we can spend much of our lives on automatic pilot, sleepwalking through life rather than being fully present for it."

What makes mindfulness helpful for pregnancy? Or parenting?

Swedish to Offer Free Class on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) at Ballard Campus Feb. 9

SEATTLE, Feb. 6, 2013 - Screenings for cancer, high blood pressure and cholesterol are probably on your doctor visit checklist. Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) probably should be, too, but many doctors don’t know about it. Vascular surgeons from Swedish are hosting a free community health education class about this silent killer and whether this important screening is right for you. The 90-minute program will be at Swedish Ballard (5300 Tallman Ave. N.W.) on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

When you come to OB Speed Dating, you’ll get the chance to meet several Obstetricians and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) who deliver at Swedish Ballard's Family Childbirth Center and get to know them in a fun, low-key environment.

Upcoming GERD talk at Swedish Issaquah on 9/26

LINX has arrived at Swedish! After several months of preparation, we will be implanting the first 3 LINX devices on September 21, 2012. For our 3 adventurous patients, we are excited to see them have their GERD controlled with the LINX and also hope that it meets their expectations.

Taking Control of Your Brain Health: Class is Sept. 29 at Swedish/Issaquah

First you can’t remember where you left your keys. Then an acquaintance’s name just won’t come to you.

Is it just old age or is it a memory disorder? Sometimes it’s hard to tell and not knowing can be equally as frustrating as forgetfulness itself.

The best way to head off memory loss and to figure out if that is in fact what you’re experiencing is to talk with your doctor and discuss your concerns. Of course, it’s not always easy or convenient to get to the doctor. Dr. Lily Jung-Henson, of the Swedish Neuroscience Institute, holds free community classes that cover these issues and allow you the chance to get some of your questions answered.

Partnering with Dr. Arpan Waghray, Medical Director for Behavioral Health at Swedish, and other members of the Swedish Rehab Services team in Issaquah, Dr. Jung-Henson will be holding a class called “Taking Control of Your Brain Health” on Saturday, September 29.

This free class will be held at the Swedish/Issaquah hospital in the Highlands from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will help you answer questions such as:
