Internationally Recognized Social Media Strategist Dana M. Lewis Joins Swedish; Swedish Continues to Expand Efforts to Reach and Educate Patients through Social Media

SEATTLE, Aug. 26, 2010 – Swedish, the largest and most comprehensive non-profit health-care provider in the Greater Seattle area, today announced the addition of Dana M. Lewis, an internationally recognized social media strategist who will serve as Swedish’s interactive marketing specialist. This new position will further contribute to Swedish’s growing reputation as the most social hospital in the Pacific Northwest.

“As a hospital, we are finding that patients are seeking out their health-care information online,” said Melissa Tizon, director of Corporate Communications at Swedish. “With this new expertise, Swedish is better equipped to meet and interact with patients online, allowing for additional avenues to educate and engage with them about their own individual health-care needs.”

Swedish has established itself as a social media leader in the Pacific Northwest region integrating social media directly into its operating rooms and various clinics. Earlier this year, a social media team from the hospital broadcasted a robot-assisted surgery through Twitter to promote kidney health awareness. Last month, Swedish’s Sleep Medicine Associates broadcasted the world’s first-ever social media 'Sleep Up,' a live overnight video stream of a patient’s sleep disorder testing, featuring video questions and answers with doctors via Ustream.tv and Twitter. These social media campaigns succeeded in reaching and educating millions of people around the world with relevant and important health-care awareness messages.

“I know firsthand as a patient and as a professional the powerful impact health-care knowledge can have for those seeking treatment. As Swedish’s new interactive marketing specialist, I plan to increase the availability and accessibility of health-care information online for patients and help to teach, coach and consult with other medical institutions in the region to improve health-care social media,” said Lewis.

Lewis is nationally recognized as the founder and moderator of “#HCSM” (Healthcare Communications & Social Media) on Twitter. “#HCSM” provides health-care professionals, students, patients and communicators a free and easily accessible online medium to discuss the role social media plays in healthcare.

With extensive background knowledge in social media, health-care communications, digital strategy, web content development, and strategic planning, Lewis is an invaluable asset to the Swedish team. While at Swedish, Lewis’ role will include helping patients find the information and support they need through increased efforts to facilitate new types of conversations online.

In the past Lewis has worked as a free-lance health communications strategist, an undergraduate researcher at the University of Alabama, and also completed communication internships at Novo Nordisk and the American Diabetes Association. Lewis brings extensive technical knowledge in addition to communications experience to her position as Interactive Marketing Specialist.

As a graduate of the University of Alabama, Lewis received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications in May 2010 with majors in Public Relations and Political Science.  She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was a member of the University Honors Program as well as the Computer-Based Honors Program. She was named to USA Today’s All-USA College Academic Team in June 2010.

Lewis has received numerous accolades and awards for her work including Best Non-profit Microblogging Award from the Society for New Communications Research Excellence, 2009 finalist for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, 2008 All-USA College Academic Team member, and 2007 Most Outstanding Freshman Award for the University of Alabama, to name a few. Lewis also co-founded and organized Social Health, the first international social media-focused health-care conference, in March 2010.

This is a very big step in the right direction. From what I've heard, Dana is the right person for the job.
